Dangerous Trend Using Magnets to Imitate Pierced Tongue
Some teenagers are practicing a dangerous trend. They are using small, ball bearing like magnets to make it look like they have a pierced tongue. They put one on the top of the tongue and one on the bottom to stay in place. However, 13-year-old Loren Garcia found out it's not a good idea. Loren swallowed 4 of the tiny magnets. Now she wants to warn parents and other teenagers about the danger.
When the magnets get into the digestive system, their powerful pull brings them closer together no matter where they might be in the intestinal tract. Dr. Saundra Kay, with Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL performed emergency surgery to remove the magnets. "They burrowed into Loren's small intestine so we had to remove a portion of her small intestine and her appendix. This is a very dangerous trend and parents should talk to their kids about it."
Loren says the magnets are so easy to swallow because they are so small. They definitely don't belong in your mouth.
