Gangrene and Soft Tissue Infections
Infection with bacteria in the Streptococcal or Clostridia families can result in very rapid destruction of skin, subcutaneous tissue and muscle leading to loss of limb and possibly life. The mainstays of treatment are intravenous antibiotics and surgical removal of infected tissue.
These infections damage the blood supply of tissue yet to be directly infected, preparing the way for bacterial advance and impairing white blood cell immune function by preventing oxygen delivery. Increasing blood oxygen levels via HBO can improve local immune function, slow or halt the spread of the microorganisms making surgery more effective, decreasing loss of life and limb.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Gangrene and Other Rapidly Progressive Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
Given the rapid rate of spread of such infections HBO should be started as soon as possible. At the Hyperbaric Medicine Center we work with a team of Surgeons with experience in the surgical treatment of necrotizing soft tissue infections as well as with Infectious Disease Specialists.
