About Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can help you lose weight quickly and maintain a healthy BMI over the long term. Evidence shows that the surgery may even reverse related metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and give you a longer, healthier life.
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery works both by restricting stomach capacity and by reducing calorie absorption into the body. Staples are used to isolate a small pouch approximately 1-2 ounces in volume at the top of the stomach, which limits food intake. The small bowel, or jejunum, is then attached to the pouch, effectively rerouting food away from the larger portion of the stomach and the upper small intestines, where most calories are processed and absorbed.
Considerations As with any surgical procedure, there may be a risk of complications, including:
• Nausea and vomiting
• Dehydration
• Constipation
• Heartburn
• Stoma obstruction
• Stretching of the stomach pouch
• Lactose intolerance
• Dumping syndrome (nausea, weakness, rapid pulse, cold sweats, dizziness, diarrhea)
• Weight regain
